Hello from your school catering team,
Catering Services, is Rhondda Cynon Taff Borough Council’s catering service, dedicated to providing nutritious and safe meals in your secondary school.
Following feedback from students we are launching our new menu’s this September across our schools. All our meals are cooked by trained staff using quality products and ingredients and in line with Food Safety Standards.
During the next twelve months all schools will be working towards the Appetite for Life programme. Appetite for Life sets out the Welsh Assembly Government’s agenda for improving the food and drink provided throughout the school day and the actions needed to make this happen. All secondary schools are currently working towards the implantation of Appetite for Life by 2010.
Where can I get a meal at Treorchy Comprehensive school?
There are three dedicated eating areas at Treorchy plus our healthy options vending machines.
Dining room 1 – Deli items, hot snacks, salad bar and beverages
Dining room 2 – Daily set menu, filled jackets, wraps and baguettes, pasta
Breakfast is served between 8.00am – 8.30am
Mid morning break between 11.00am – 11.15am
Lunch between 1.15pm –2.00pm
CafĂ© – Baguettes, filled rolls, hot and cold snacks, beverages
Open from 10.00am to 2.30pm
Please check the information boards for opening times, which may change during the year to meet the schools programme.
Why should I choose a school meal?
Schools are ideal places to encourage healthier eating and good choices in food for our children and students, so helping to prevent childhood obesity and other health complications.
All catering staff are fully trained in food safety and in nutrition and healthy eating. They encourage students to select a healthy choice menus and options and also provide a range of “Fun Day’s” and educational themed events .
Actively working in partnership with Healthy Schools, Health Promotion, Dietitions and colleagues from the British Dental Association one of our ain aims is to actively encourage the take up of the:
- Eat 5 fruit and vegetable campaign,
- Eat 3 Calcium awareness,
- and the Eat 2 Fish program
What we offer?
We offer a balanced set menu of the day fro £2.00, which changes each season. There is also a range of:
- Home made dish of the day e.g. curry, chilli, Cajun or traditional option from £1.65
- Range of freshly prepared salads, salad & pasta pots from £1.50
- Filled jacket potatoes from £1.35
- Filled tortilla wraps, pitas, baguettes, rolls and hot baps from £1.00
- Pre- selection vegetarian menu from £1.00
- Delicious desserts, puddings, fresh fruit and yoghurts from 25p-£1.00
- Carvery lunch ( not all schools) £2.00
- Pasta and Pizza of the day from £1.00 to £1.65
- Range of nutritious snacks and drinks from 25p to £1.00
Each cafeteria is different and many are open from breakfast through until school closure and include carvery units, deli bars, coffee corners, boost bars and food hall outlets including pasta, spice and salad bars.
Our Menus
Are designed with the needs of individual schools in mind. Students are actively involved in the planning of menus and the selection of products in many schools. All cafeterias offer a range of healthy, nutritious and balanced options and also a range of snack items and grab and go items.
- Prepared at the school by our trained staff
- All our fish is sustainably sourced
- Do not contain any banded additives or colourings
- Do not contain any hydrogenated vegetable oils
- Do not knowingly use any GM ingredients
- Only allow a fried product twice per week, Fries on Friday plus one other.
- Support the Eat 2 fish programme
- Support the Eat 3 calcium awareness
- Support the Eat 5 fruit and vegetable campaign
- We try and use as much biodegradable and recycled products within the resources we have.
- Do not offer confectionary, fizzy drinks (pop), full fat crisps and any products without a nutritional value.
Free Meals Provision Entitlement
If you think you maybe entitled to free school meals, please contact the school who will be able to provide the appropriate application forms and advise you on this.
Why choose a school meal?
- Meals are balanced and nutritious with a variety of offers every day
- Students benefit from sitting down together and eating together
- Time saved not having to prepare packed lunches, plus no worry about keeping food fresh and hygienic
- Food produced is from approved suppliers, many local
- No MRM (mechanically retrieved meat) is used.
- We do not knowingly use Genetically Modified (GM) ingredients
- All foods are free from hydrogenated oil, banned colourings and additives.
- School meals follow healthy guidelines for salt, sugar and fat
- Only use sustainably resourced fish on our menus
- Comply with the Nutritional Standards for school lunch
- Food choices available from 99p to £2.00 for a 2 course set menu
