On Wednesday 23rd November a number of Year 10 pupils from the Science and Engineering departments spent a day doing various teamwork and problem solving tasks at Margam Country Park.

It was organised by the Engineering Education Scheme Wales and supported by various aspects of the British Army. EESW is a non-profit, educational charity which has been in existence since 1989. They run schemes across Wales to inspire and motivate young people to choose a career in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

The event started off with some team building exercises which apart from getting everybody muddy, also got everybody communicating and working together.

Once the ice had been broken, a number of challenges were set including building an unsupported bridge structure using just 3 planks and 3 boxes (not so easy; each plank was only allowed to touch one box), retrieving equipement across a river using only ropes and finally, building a well engineered crane with a huge mecanno set.

The event was a huge success because not only did it bring the pupils closer together to solve problems but it also inspired them to consider a future in STEM subjects due to it breaking down so many of stereotypes associated with these careers.

Ar y 22ain o Dachwedd, fel rhan o weithgareddau pontio'r ysgol cafodd rai o ddisgyblion Iaith Gyntaf Blwyddyn 6 y cylch wahoddiad i fynychu bore o weithgareddau yn Ysgol Gyfun Treorci. Cafodd y disgyblion hwyl yn ymarfer eu doniau dramatig yn ogystal â chyfle i fwynhau cystadlu yn erbyn ei gilydd yn ystod gwers chwaraeon.

Yn y prynhawn ymunodd disgyblion Iaith Gyntaf Blwyddyn 8 â'r disgyblion cynradd er mwyn mynd i wylio Panto “Jac a’r goeden ffa” yn theatr y Muni ym Mhontypridd.

Martyn Geraint oedd seren y sioe ac roedd y disgyblion i gyd yn llawn cyffro a bwrlwm wrth wylio’r cymeriadau yn perfformio ar lwyfan y Muni. Bu’r disgyblion a’r staff yn canu ac yn dawnsio a oedd yn sicrhau bod pawb wedi eu hudo gan hwyl ŵyl y Nadolig, (er mai ond mis Tachwedd oedd hi!)

Mwynheuodd pawb y daith ac edrychwn ymlaen at y sioe nesaf.

On the 22nd of November, as part of the school's transition activities, some Welsh Language pupils from year 6 were invited to enjoy a morning of activities at Treorchy Comprehensive School. The pupils had fun competing against each other in various sporting tasks, and they got the opportunity to show off their acting skills during a Drama workshop.

In the afternoon they were joined by First Language pupils from Year 8 to visit the Muni theatre in Pontypridd to see the Welsh Panto 'Jac a'r goeden ffa’.

Martyn Geraint was the star of the show and the pupils and staff enjoyed watching the characters on stage, whilst taking part in the singing and dancing. By the end of the day everyone was excited and looking forward to Christmas (Even though it was only November!).

We look forward to the next show.

Pupils and staff at Treorchy Comprehensive School have been commemorating this Remembrance Day by placing a message on the Remembrance Wall in Block 10.  Leah Meredith and Ffion Thomas of Year 12 dedicated their time and effort as History and Art students to paint a fitting reminder that this year is not only the 11th day of the 11th month, but also the 11th year.  Pupils have been buying poppies and writing emotional messages remembering family who have served or are currently serving in the forces.

Ar nos Wener, 4ydd o Dachwedd, aeth yr adran Gymraeg â grŵp o ddisgyblion o flynyddoedd 10, 11 a 12 i’r Grand Pavilion ym Mhorthcawl i weld sioe Gymraeg newydd sbon o’r enw Salsa. Dywedodd y cwmni theatr y byddai’r sioe yn ddigon da i gystadlu yn erbyn Strictly Come Dancing a dylai pawb fynd ag esgidiau dawnsio yn barod am noson llawn hwyl a sbri. Roedd y sioe am bâr priod a oedd wedi colli diddordeb yn ei gilydd ac roedd y wraig, Rhian eisiau mynd i wersi dawnsio er mwyn iddyn nhw ddod i adnabod ei gilydd unwaith eto. Doedd y gŵr ddim yn hapus i fynd - roedd mwy o ddiddordeb ganddo edrych i’r awyr a gwylio’r sêr. Felly, aethon nhw i’r dosbarth ond pan ddaeth yr athrawes ddawnsio mewn - athrawes brydferth iawn, cwympodd Wayne mewn cariad yn syth. Cwympodd Rhian hefyd, ond i’r llawr! Doedd Rhian ddim yn gallu mynd rhagor felly dechreuodd Wayne ddweud celwydd wrthi hi - dywedodd ei fod yn mynd am dro ond roedd e am fynd i ddawnsio gyda’r athrawes ddawnsio - Adela Vegas. Darganfu Wayne yn syth bin ei fod e’n dda iawn yn dawnsio a gofynnodd Adela iddo fe ddawnsio gyda hi mewn cystadleuaeth ddawnsio. Ond….cawson nhw eu darganfod gan Rhian a doedd hi ddim yn hapus gan fod Wayne wedi mynd tu ôl i’w chefn. Wrth lwc, aeth Rhian i’r gystadleuaeth a gwelodd hi Wayne wrth ei fodd yn dawnsio a gadawon nhw gyda’i gilydd wedi cymodi. Roedd hi’n sioe hynod o ddoniol ac roedd pawb yn gwenu o glust i glust! Ar ôl i’r sioe orffen, cafodd y disgyblion y cyfle i fynd ar y llwyfan i ddangos eu sgiliau dawnsio nhw - profiad bythgofiadwy yn wir!

On Friday night, 4th November, the Welsh department took a group of pupils from years 10, 11 and 12 to the Grand Pavilion in Porthcawl to see the new Welsh show ‘Salsa’. The theatre company said that it was set to rival Strictly Come Dancing and that everyone should take their dancing shoes. The show was about a married couple who had lost interest in each other so the wife, Rhian wanted to go to dancing lessons to help with their marriage. Her husband, Wayne wasn’t too keen o the idea, he preferred to star gaze than face his problems. Off they went then to the dancing lessons and when the dance teacher walked in, a very attractive dance teacher, Wayne instantly fell in love. Rhian fell as well, but face flat onto the floor!  Rhian wasn’t able to dance anymore so Wayne started lying about his whereabouts – claiming he was going for a walk when he was really going to the dance lessons to dance with the dance teacher – Adela Vegas. Wayne soon found out that he was a good dancer and Adela asked him to dance with her in a dance competition. However, Rhian discovered Wayne’s secret and was not impressed with his lying ways. Fortunately for Wayne, Rhian went to the competition and saw how good a dancer Wayne was and the pair left hand in hand having found each other again. The show was extremely amusing and everyone cried tears of laughter. When the show finished, the pupils got the chance to get up on the stage and show off their dance moves – a truly unforgettable experience!

Treorchy Cadets win Silver at first attempt

Competing for the 1st time in the Cadet Cambrian Patrol Competition, held on the 18th & 19th September, the Treorchy Comprehensive School CCF team were awarded a silver medal.
The competition is open to cadets from all over Wales, and is a true test of physical and mental endurance. The cadets work as a team to navigate a route of approximately 22 km, via a series of checkpoints, where they are tested on various aspects of the Cadet syllabus, including 1st Aid, field craft and map reading.

The Treorchy Comprehensive School team were the highest scoring junior team from a CCF, beating more established CCF’s in private schools. The patrol commander was Cadet Sgt Catherine Lumby, who despite sustaining an injury early into the competition continued to lead her team, knowing that if she dropped out the team would lose points.

The whole team were extremely tired at the prize giving on Sunday afternoon, but can be very proud of their efforts and the Silver medals that they were awarded.

Uncovering Chemical Secrets

On Wednesday the 15th of September a number of our Chemistry A level class attended a course at the University of Wales, Cardiff. The title of the course was ‘Uncovering chemical secrets’ and the pupils certainly did this! The day consisted of a morning lecture on chemical synthesis, an opportunity to complete a number of exciting experiments in the university laboratory and a tour of the Chemistry department where a number of expensive analytical machines and techniques were explained in detail.

The students thoroughly enjoyed the day and found it extremely useful as it covered a number of topics that they will be examined on in January as part of their A level qualification. It also gave the students a taste of university life, which hopefully they will experience next year when they leave Treorchy Comprehensive and embark on their future careers!

Outstanding Performances by our Dancers

Congratulations to the dancers from Year 9, 10, 11,12 & 13 for giving outstanding and professional performances at the Skills Cymru Conference held at the Millennium Stadium on the 16th & 17th September. All groups were invited to perform to an audience of students, teachers and exhibiters from across Wales and thoroughly enjoyed the day. Each performance was shown on the large screens in the Stadium throughout the day and footage was later shown on the ITV news.
