Treorchy Comprehensive School

On Friday 24th June, 50 Year 8 pupils went back in time to visit the Big Pit in Blaenavon. They were taken underground by a qualified ex-miner and experienced for themselves the hardships children of their age would have endured to make money for their families in the 1800s.

Pupils particularly enjoyed travelling below ground 300ft in a suspended cage lift, and then turning their lights out to see what life was like before the use of electric lighting in the mines. After a hearty lunch, pupils experienced the ‘story of coal’ revelling in the simulated mine explosion and then visited the Pit Head bath exhibition with a number of interactive tasks designed to ensure greater understanding of this important part of South Wales’ heritage.

Staff and guides commented on the exceptional behaviour of all pupils and pupils themselves rated the day 9/10 stating the only thing they would improve would be to have JLS there to guide them around!
