TROOPING OF THE COLOUR - 2008
As the Royal Regiment of the Welsh Guards is the sponsor of Treorchy Comprehensive school Combined Cadet Force (CCF), they were invited to attend the Major Generals Review of the Trooping of the Colour. The event is held every year, but each of the five Guards’ regiments only gets to hold it once every five years.
The event is a big public event, which is televised by the BBC, and to be invited is a prestigious opportunity.
The Trooping of the Colour, which happens on the Queens Birthday, is held at Horse Guards Parade which is a stones throw away from Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square. It includes 1400 guardsmen from all five House-guards regiments marching into the parade ground in front of Admiralty House, led by their regimental brass bands. They are then presented to the Queen and other members of the Royal family in front of the Household Cavalry and the Kings Troop Royal Artillery, which involves over 200 horses. The occasion finishes with a fly-over by the RAF and the Queens Royal Salute at 11 o’clock.
The fifteen cadets that got the opportunity to see the parade thoroughly enjoyed it, and were then invited to Wellington Barracks, to enjoy a Barbecue and post parade party.
Treorchy CCF gained a lot of attention, as they were the only Cadet Force invited. Other guests included WRU Chief Executives Roger Lewis and David Pickering and they also got to meet the Major General himself.
